Family Life: Family life is crazy in my home with 4 active kids! Our free time is usually split between practices (sports, instruments, drama, academic clubs, and LEGO LEAGUE!) and carving out time to play board games, pretend we are good at Rock Band, sing badly to great music, and indulge in our collective geek fandoms.
What do you like best about the work you do?: As a divorced mom held captive my multiple kids’ athletic and school schedules, I understand how hard it can be to find even 10 more minutes to add in more “tasks” to do. My therapy ideas center around everyday routines for the mom/ dad/ grandparent/ guardian who just wants 5 minutes alone in the bathroom without toddler hands creepily reaching in under the door or bursting in to show you their sock fell off. I love when I get the chance to show families how they are already their child’s best teacher and how to use their own daily (be they silly, stinky, goopy, sticky routines) to enhance their child’s communication. It’s nice to get to hear a child say his or her first word, but my favorite moments are when families forget I am still there for a moment and enjoy taking turns communicating with back and forth interactions.
